Farming is in crisis. Recent reports issued by insurers, NFU Mutual and Farmers Weekly reveal that it’s not just falling milk prices that are causing hardship for farmers but also widespread theft of machinery.
Don’t Make Life Easy for a Criminal
Too often farmers leave essential quad bikes or other pieces of machinery outside, within easy reach of any passing thief. A temporary building structure could reduce this problem. An article in Farmers Weekly recorded that in 2014, ‘ the highest levels of organised crime reported were in the theft of vehicles.’
For many in the agricultural sector, vehicles are a way of checking on stock, maintaining fences and play an invaluable role in everyday life. In 2014 the Home Office published figures revealing that the agricultural, forestry and fishing sector had suffered 95,000 crimes. Many of these thefts could have been reduced had the farmers used a secure overnight storage facility for their vehicles.
A New Network to Cut Crime
As well as recommending that farmers secure their vehicles and plant, experts have joined together and formed the National Rural Crime Network. The Police Commissioner for North Yorkshire, Julia Mulligan, who is heading up the new network has quoted the NFU who states, ‘ crime is a persistent problem in rural areas.’
The new network will keep workers within the industry informed of criminal activities across the UK. A temporary building would at least give them peace of mind that valuable assets are safe.
